Professor Jon Skinner


Cardiac Electrophysiologist

Work History

Jon trained in cardiac electrophysiology and ablation at AK St Georg in Hamburg, Germany with Karl-Heinz Kuch and Joachim Hebe in 1996 and also in Bristol (UK).

From 1998 to the current time, Jon has been working as Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist / Electrophysiologist at Greenlane Paediatric Cardiac Services in Auckland, New Zealand.

He is lead clinician for the NZ national children’s arrhythmia service and a specialist in catheter ablation of arrhythmias in children and in adults with congenital heart disease. Before this, Jon graduated in medicine from Leicester Medical School in the UK and trained in paediatrics in Nottingham, Newcastle upon Tyne (UK) as well as Newcastle, NSW Australia.

In 1994 Jon did his Doctorate in Neonatal Circulation (Newcastle upon Tyne) and went on to train in Paediatric Cardiology at Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, as well as doing further training in both Birmingham and Bristol (UK).

Dr Skinner was appointed as an Associate Professor at the University of Auckland Medical School in 2010 and Professor in 2016.

Jon is Chairman of the Cardiac Inherited Disease Group New Zealand, the genetics working group of the Cardiac society of Australia and New Zealand and TRAGADY (TransTasman Response Against sudden Death in the Young). He is an Editorial Board Member of the Heart Rhythm Journal.
